The Food Marketing Institute (FMI) appreciates the opportunity to respond to the request from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for information regarding the development of safety standards for fresh produce and strategies to ensure compliance.1 FMI commends the agency for seeking input from all industry sectors, including retail, and for working to develop meaningful and effective safety standards for fresh produce. As explained below, FMI supports FDA’s effort to establish a comprehensive produce safety regulation and believes that such a regulation must be mandatory for all produce production and packing in order to be effective.
