WASHINGTON, DC — January 11, 2002 — Seeking to help small and mid-size food retailers enhance pre-employment screening procedures, the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and ChoicePoint (CPS:NYSE) today announced plans for a strategic alliance and access to ChoicePoint’s Web-based background screening service called ScreenNow.

“FMI is excited to announce this strategic alliance with ChoicePoint, the nation’s leading provider of pre-employment screening services,” said Tim Hammonds, FMI president and CEO. “We are also very pleased to offer ScreenNow to our member companies.”

“Through the alliance, ChoicePoint will offer FMI’s member retailers the ability to screen potential employees using the ScreenNow service,” said David Cook, vice president, WorkPlace Solutions for ChoicePoint. “ScreenNow can go a long way toward helping retailers reduce workplace fraud, waste and the high cost of employee turnover.”

ScreenNow is an online pre-employment screening service that provides background information to small and mid-sized businesses, generally those with 50 to 2000 employees. Information searches are compliant with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Accessing national and local databases, ScreenNow offers instant access to criminal record databases in states that make them available, motor vehicle record checks, credit reports and identity verifications, and online ordering of drug screening kits.

Through the alliance, retailers will realize immediate benefits, such as quick and easy access to reliable FCRA-compliant information and automated time-saving screening processes. In addition, ScreenNow can help small and mid-sized employers compete for the most desired candidates.

“ScreenNow will help food retail companies to become more competitive employers,” Hammonds said. “Considering that an estimated 34 percent of resumes and 73 percent of job applications contain falsified or embellished information, and with the cost of replacing employees often ranging in the area of $10,000 to $40,000, ScreenNow will be a tremendous asset to our industry.”
