Jan. 9 marks National Law Enforcement Day, a time to honor the critical role law enforcement plays in keeping our communities safe. In the food industry, the partnership between law enforcement and asset protection professionals ensures the safety of supply chains, retail spaces, and customer trust.
The food industry faces a range of threats, including organized retail crime (ORC) and cybersecurity breaches. These challenges risk financial loss, operational disruption, and access to essential goods. Collaboration with law enforcement is crucial to addressing these issues.
Fighting Theft and Organized Retail Crime
Shoplifting and organized theft costs the retail industry billions each year, with food retailers often targeted for high-demand categories across the store such as baby formula, over-the-counter medications, and alcohol. Law enforcement agencies provide critical support in tracking, arresting, and prosecuting offenders. By sharing intelligence and conducting joint investigations, law enforcement and retailers can dismantle criminal networks and prevent future crimes.
Strengthening Cybersecurity
The food industry’s reliance on technology makes it vulnerable to cyberattacks that threaten customer data, disrupt supply chains, and endanger food safety systems. Agencies like the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) help businesses identify and mitigate these threats. By leveraging these resources, food retailers can strengthen their defenses against cybercrime.

Law enforcement plays a key role in ensuring workplace safety for employees and customers. Whether addressing theft, managing crises, or responding to threats of violence, officers help create secure environments in stores, warehouses, and distribution centers. Asset protection teams often collaborate with local law enforcement to develop safety protocols, conduct active shooter training, and enhance emergency response plans.
