The FMI Supplier Diversity Committee Summer Retreat in Grand Rapids, Mich. was a dynamic event underscoring the committee's dedication to advancing diversity and inclusion within the supplier community. Hosted by Meijer Inc., the retreat provided insightful discussions, strategic planning and invaluable networking opportunities among practitioners, reinforcing the importance of their collective mission.

The companies in attendance included major retailers and suppliers such as H-E-B, Kellanova, Giant Eagle, Amazon.com Inc., The Kroger Co., SpartanNash Company, ALDI Inc., WK Kellogg Co., Meijer, Inc., Mondelez International, Southeastern Grocers Inc., UNFI, National Co+op Grocers, and Bimbo Bakeries USA. The warm-up session allowed participants to introduce themselves, share their roles in supplier diversity and discuss their ambitious goals for their programs. This set a collaborative and goal-oriented atmosphere right from the start.

Championing Commitment to Supplier Diversity

Jamie Akemann, Group Vice President of Hardlines and Global Sourcing at Meijer, Inc., outlined Meijer's commitment to supplier diversity. Carla Hendon, Director of Supplier Diversity and Indirect Procurement at Meijer, Inc., detailed the company's integrated approach to diversity, equity and inclusion, showing how supplier diversity aligns with Meijer's mission and drives superior outcomes. She also introduced their partners at Start Garden, a Grand Rapids-based business incubator that mentors small businesses toward success.

Next, Boris Oglesby, Executive Vice President & Practice Leader at Circana, presented the Diversity Advantage Program, highlighting strategies to leverage diversity for innovation and growth. Their insights sparked engaging discussions and deepened attendees' understanding of effective diversity practices.

Action-Oriented Sessions

The retreat featured discussions and task force reports on building relationships, securing increased budgets and support, and aligning supplier diversity strategies with company goals. Stephanie Burton from The Kroger Co. and Lori Rodriques from UNFI shared their strategies for gaining internal buy-in for supplier diversity initiatives. These sessions provided attendees with practical tools and insights to enhance their programs.

Connections that Matter: The Value of In-Person Networking

One of the retreat's key benefits was the networking opportunities it provided. Meijer, Inc. hosted an evening event that allowed supplier diversity professionals to strengthen relationships and foster a sense of community.

Active involvement in an FMI committee, like the Supplier Diversity Committee, provides immense value by connecting practitioners, elevating industry standards, sharing best practices and driving meaningful change. The committee's efforts ensure that supplier diversity remains a priority, promoting innovation and business success within the industry.
